New Job, New Look

Time to update the look, it's been about six months I think. Anyway, that Remington image (icon) was getting ugly on me.

I wouldn't say the new look is a masterwork, either, but at least I don't cringe when I look at it yet.

I started as a tech consultant with the Fund for the City of New York recently, more specifically with the Non-Profit Computer Academy section. The Fund's mission is to improve the overall quality of life for New Yorkers, which is something I'm down with, being one myself. I'm glad to help out any way I can, and since they're paying me it's all the better.

The first big project I'm working on is the development of a Community Portal, a sort of neighborhood-specific information clearinghouse that is strikingly similar in concept to what Rick, Alex and I put together at GreatDayAmerica.com, except not motivated by informercials or the whims of Michael Young.

The long-term goal is the development of an open-source software package that creates a collaborative, multi-lingual community portal with calendar, news, historical and cultural information, kids activities, and a comprehensive guide to local resources. I'm paraphrasing a bit, but that's the idea.

It's not the sexiest project. But it could develop into something really vital and useful in the right hands. My job is to whip it into something usable by December 6 so that the portal can proceed to the next round of funding.
